Call for Freelancers

Call for Freelancers to participate in UpTo, a popup public relations, design and marketing firm helping small businesses in a community near you.


UpTo, the region’s first pop-up creative firm, relies on entrepreneurial freelance designers and writers and a project manager to maintain artistic quality and to deliver original work in a short period of time for its customers. UpTo educates small business owners about what it means to have exceptional creative work to tell a story to get more business. UpTo is looking for freelance writers, designers, artists, illustrators and a social media strategist.


Those writers, designers and social media strategist who live in Wilkinsburg, McKees Rocks, Brentwood, Baldwin, Whitehall, Mt. Oliver, Jefferson Hills, Connellsville, Monongahela, Morgantown, WV and Star City, WV; and the City of Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Carrick, Overbrook, and Brookline, are highly preferred.


BUT we accept applications from all designers, writers and social media strategists working in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia willing to work in southwestern Pennsylvania communities. The employment is in one or two week sessions. We plan to deploy 9 – 12 UpTo events this year.


UpTo is looking for creative professionals who have a commitment to create grassroots change in a community, good interpersonal skills, willing to interact with clients and small business owners and produce quality work in a short time period. You will need to have the courage to solicit local businesses and explain UpTo’s educational mission to the community.


This fast-paced, exciting environment helps you update your creative in your portfolio, find a new client prospect pool, and you will be paid an hourly rate including the opportunity to profit share the popup’s collective compensation from those who participate. You must have your own laptop with appropriate technology to support your creative discipline. You will receive genuine feedback from UpTo customers in this teamwork environment.


You must be passionate about freelance and be a true independent thinker.


What is UpTo?

UpTo works in a storefront on main streets for one week at a time to allow small businesses to quickly engage in services that use  your quality skills. By being present within the main street community we have the opportunity to educate small businesses about the importance of these service at the same time create new identities for these business owners and give them the best practices on how these services should be deployed.


We put small businesses on a path of success by offering other online tools and webinars to help them understand the importance of the creative industries. UpTo aims to create a large network of creative freelancers and small business owners who can catalyze and serve each other’s best interests.

Call for Designers //

  • Designers must be proficient in all Adobe design software, a high level knowledge of InDesign required
  • Must be highly proficient in Microsoft office products
  • Must be both Macintosh and PC knowledgeable
  • Extremely detail oriented with great organizational skills
  • Charity experience and good interpersonal skills a must
  • Strong knowledge of graphic design terms and applications
  • Ability to work in a busy environment, working with several programmers and designers
  • Able to set and maintain both short term deadlines
  • Ability to takes notes, self-manage and follow through on complex projects
  • Willingness to take on new projects and generally seek out ways to help others
  • Must be highly organized, reliable and proactive
  • Able to troubleshoot difficult or sensitive problems and find positive solutions
  • Comfortable working directly with our other staff programmers and customers
  • Prior client interaction recommended
  • Must have your own laptop and Adobe software


Call for Writers //

  • Writers must be experienced media relations or social media writers
  • Well versed in small business customer relations, including language used with cause products or services
  • Extremely organized and self-sufficient
  • Adaptable and change-driven
  • Polished language and social media writing skills a must
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Prior client interaction recommended
  • Must have your own laptop


Call for Digital Media Strategist //

  • Ability to provide consultation in social media management and analytics
  • Identify and drive action against emerging trends and technology
  • Create social media content including but not limited to: copy, photos, videos and giveaways to drive engagement
  • Provide tools, training, and feedback
  • Consult on how to grow following for social media accounts
  • Working knowledge of SEO strategies
  • Comfortable with client interaction


Call for Project Manager // 

  • The project manager must have client interaction experience
  • Must know how to use an iPad and Square services
  • Ability to travel and meet with small business owners
  • Prepare the space and manage the team
  • Communicate day-to-day activity to UpTo management
  • Must have great interpersonal skills
  • Extremely organized and self-sufficient
  • Adaptable and change-driven
  • Be proactive to meet, call or network with small business owners
  • Manage social media channels
  • Promote UpTo on a grassroots level
  • Manage updates to the website
  • Manage schedules of appointments
  • Must have a laptop and manage an internet hotspot
  • Event planning experience a plus
  • Ability to source donations and broker trade with local business
  • Be knowledgable about the mission and vision of UpTo
